Smart Home app: A deep dive into the UI design process

I designed Smart Home App as a visual exercise focused on a modern interface for smart home control.
I chose the neomorphism style for its soft, three-dimensional aesthetic that adds depth and a tactile feel, reinforcing the concept of advanced home technology. Below, I present the full UI design process.

The project began by researching neomorphism visual references, which helped me define the foundations of the design system

The project began with a visual exploration phase focused on the neomorphism style, aiming to understand its characteristics, applications, and possibilities within interface design. To do this, I gathered a collection of visual references and organized them into a moodboard, which helped me identify common patterns and define a clear aesthetic direction.

From this analysis, I established the foundations of the design system: selecting a soft, monochromatic color palette suitable for highlighting the subtle volume typical of neomorphism, and choosing a modern, legible typography that complements the clean and minimalist aesthetic of the interface.

This preparatory work was key to maintaining visual consistency and harmony throughout the design.

Designing the components

The components were designed with subtle shadows and rounded corners to reflect the neomorphism style, ensuring both functionality and aesthetics

Each component, from buttons to sliders and cards, was designed with subtle inner and outer shadows to achieve the characteristic three-dimensional and tactile effect.

Special attention was given to maintaining balanced proportions, rounded corners, and appropriate spacing to enhance readability and interaction.

Regarding icons, I designed a custom set that harmonizes with the color palette and overall style, using thin lines and simple shapes to complement the softness of neomorphism without visually overloading the interface.

This approach ensures all system elements maintain visual consistency and reinforce the app’s identity.

Designing the app screens

After consolidating the design system, I applied it to the screen designs to ensure visual and functional consistency

Once the design system with all its components was defined and consolidated, the next step was to apply it to the app’s screen designs.

Thanks to this system, visual and functional consistency was ensured throughout the interface, facilitating coherence between elements and enhancing the overall experience.

Working on a solid and uniform foundation allowed me to focus on the composition and visual flow of the screens, optimizing aesthetics without losing the distinctive identity of the neomorphism style.
